Slow Loris – Endangered Cuteness

Sunday, December 16, 2012

Slow lorises and slender lorises are cute animals but their cuteness has put them on the brink of extinction. Many people do not understand that slow lorises are not like kittens or puppies and having them as pets is actually dangerous for their health and even for the very existence of the entire population of these primates.

Slow loris - endangered because cute

Cute pets are popular on the Internet. So I decided to leverage the power of cuteness and promote the idea of preserving the wildlife by making a call through my art for abstaining from human’s fads which do nothing but put innocent animals in peril and physical suffering. Slow lorises undergo a painful untoothing procedure which suggests cutting out or pulling up to 8 of their teeth before delivering them as pets. This awful operation is often done with simple nail clippers and in many cases it causes lethal infection or blood loss, not to mention an excruciating pain the animals experience.

I really hope that someone looking to buy a slow loris as a pet will get to this page and change his/her mind after reading this article. It is important to make the demand for pet lorises decrease by raising people's awareness of this species endangerment and tortures. That’s why I’ve made this drawing of a cute slow loris. Hopefully, this image will attract some visitors to this page and those who wish to adopt a loris as an exotic pet will shift their focus to less endangered animals or traditional pets such as cats, dogs, hamsters etc.

You’d Better Purchase a Hi-Res Image than a Real Slow Loris

Slow lorises’ cuteness creates a truly insatiable desire in lots of people for keeping one of these living cartoons at home as a pet. Many of those who set off to buy a slow loris are probably not aware of the harm they are causing these long-suffering creatures by keeping them locked in their houses and thus helping boost the illegal pet trade. I know it may seem a poor substitution but I strongly recommend that you’d better purchase my drawing of a cute slow loris than a real one. So why it’s better to buy the high resolution image for those who love slow lorises and would like to express their love by protecting them rather than supporting pet smugglers’ cruel business with their money?

  • You can print out this drawing and hang it on a wall to always get amused with the slow loris’ cuteness without paying for harming and torturing it;
  • You will be able to tell more about the slow loris endangerment to your friends and relatives who will see this cool drawing in your place;
  • You can print this high resolution royalty free image on a t-shirt or publish it on a website or a magazine to let the wide public know about the endangered species issue:
  • slow loris t-shirt, endangered species t-shirt
You can print the image on a t-shirt to let people know about the problem of slow loris endangerment.
  • You will support my social work in creating drawings to address people from all over the world with the problem of endangered animals.

I have a few special ideas of artworks dedicated to the endangered species issues. Unfortunately, I cannot focus on social projects too often as I have to work on paid commissions to be able to pay my bills and feed the family. If people buy my animal drawings, they will help create a budget necessary for me to spend more time on my wildlife protection initiative without having to worry too much about money.

Trout Drawing for a Hotel in England

Tuesday, March 6, 2012

I have recently been commissioned by an interior design consultancy from Great Britain (Avid Design) to make a series of wildlife drawings. I was to create five pencil drawings featuring a trout, a stag, a horse, a wild goose and a pheasant. Avid Design needed high resolution images of the animals to reproduce them on a glass film for a window at Exmoor White Horse Inn – a hotel situated in a picturesque area of South West England offering some wildlife-related activities such as safari, horse riding and the deer rutting season.

I will dedicate a blog post to each particular drawing created within this Avid Design project. This post features a trout which is a fish taking a special place in every fisherman's heart.

Bison Drawing for Buffalo Jackson Trading Co.

Saturday, February 25, 2012

I’ve been a proud artist for Buffalo and Company for more than a year. Now when Buffalo and Co. is about to be re-branded into Buffalo Jackson Trading Co. the management of this classic men’s fashion company is ready for new artworks to be introduced to the overall look of their branding elements as well as to their collection of awesome t-shirts and other apparel and accessories reflecting their philosophy of rugged, classic masculinity. One of the main components of the company’s brand to be refreshed is the logo featuring an American buffalo (aka bison).

You can visit my previous posts featuring American wildlife drawings which I created for Buffalo and Company to see the style of my artworks the guys from Buffalo and Company were happy to adopt for their t-shirt collection. However they needed a new drawing of a bison to become a part of their brand and, in particular, the logo. Two versions of the bison image is to be created – a detailed bison drawing and the one adapted for embroidery on clothes and other needs requiring less detailed graphics. Below you can see the detailed drawing of a bison which is to become the mascot for Buffalo Jackson Trading Co. featured in the company’s logo.

Bison Drawing

Thursday, February 17, 2011

This is another good example of how my artworks shown in previous posts can lead new clients to me. This time I am talking about a bison drawing in the post dedicated to the series of North American wildlife illustrations created by me for Buffalo and Company. The bison illustration had been found by people who also needed original buffalo art to create a cool-looking bison engraving for custom wood urns. Thus they commissioned me to create a new bison drawing for this engraving purpose.

The bison image will be engraved on wooden urns in quite a peculiar and sophisticated way. The engraving company uses a low power industrial laser to “burn” images and wording into soft materials (such as wood & plastic). For the best results with the laser a black and white picture is needed with almost no gray in it. The laser does not interpret gray very well. That is why my style of cross-hatching is ideal for engraving the American buffalo image on urns. The process also requires high resolution pictures with clean edges which can be enlarged without getting pixilated. That’s why I’ve made a rather big drawing to ensure high quality engraving.

After I had created the first bison drawing, a few people asked me which pen I used to draw the animal. Well, I had tried a lot of pens to make pen and ink drawings, but eventually I set my choice on an Axent Autographe 0.5 gel pen. This pen has a convenient design and the diameter of the tip which perfectly suits my drawing requirements. It allows easily control line boldness. This Axent pen along with a few fountain pens is my favorite drawing instrument when it comes to cross-hatching technique.

Moose Bull Drawing

Monday, January 10, 2011

Another great animal drawn by me for the American wildlife t-shirts series is a moose. The moose is the largest extant species in the deer family which makes a special animal. The moose bull is an especially cool looking beast due to its great imposing antlers. I do believe that moose t-shirts produced by Buffalo and Company will be popular among those who honor wildlife of North America.

Drawing a Grizzly Bear for the American Wildlife T-Shirts Series

Sunday, January 9, 2011

A grizzly bear is another wild animal I have drawn for the American wildlife t-shirts series produced by Buffalo and Company. The grizzly (aka North American brown bear) is a beautiful and powerful animal highly respected by Native Americans for many centuries, and I hope grizzlies are effectively protected by environmentalists of the United States and Canada today as well. I also hope that Americans wearing grizzly t-shirts will always be reminded of how proud they should be of having such great animals on their land.

Drawing for the US Catfish Association

Thursday, December 2, 2010

My recent post about hunting and fishing drawings has not passed unnoticed as shortly after I had made this post I was contacted by a guy named Paul who belonged to the Brotherhood of Catfishermen. He wanted me to create a custom drawing of catfish for the United States Catfish Association (USCA). The drawing would be used on t-shirts that would be screen printed. It was supposed to be a life-like catfish scene artwork showcasing three species of North American catfish: a blue catfish, a channel catfish and a flathead catfish.

Below I want to show you the final result and the drawing progress video. By the way, the drawing was made with Pentel brush pen.

Hunting and Fishing Drawings

Wednesday, October 27, 2010

Shortly after I had finished the wildlife illustrations project for Buffalo and Company (if you follow my blog you might remember those drawings of an American buffalo, an elk, a bass, a trout and mallards I had created for Buffalo and Company. If you do not know what I am talking about, please, check out the related links below this post) I was approached by a guy from the USA, who had hunting and fishing business, about possibility to make some drawings for him. The guy was impressed by my wildlife illustrations and wanted something in the same style to create unique designs for his promotional products like t-shirts etc. He had plenty of interesting ideas and I really loved working for him.

I want to show you a few drawings I created for his hunting and fishing company which he was about to bring online. The company is called “The Daily Hush” (coined from “the daily hunt and fish”). You are welcome to visit their website dedicated to hunting and fishing. I do believe that sooner or later the site with an online shop, where you will be able to purchase various hunting and fishing products and accessories as well as t-shirts and other stuff with my drawings and designs exclusively created for "The Daily Hush", will become very popular among fishing and hunting lovers.

New American Wildlife Illustrations

Monday, September 6, 2010

After a relatively short period of time since I had made wildlife illustrations for American Wildlife t-shirts by Buffalo and Company (today the company is called Buffalo Jackson Trading Co. ), the guys from Buffalo & Co. got back to me to offer another wildlife illustrations project to expand the series of “Honor Your Wild” t-shirts. I guess the first promotional campaign was a success for Buffalo & Company and people loved their t-shirts for which I had had honor to draw beautiful animals of North America.

This time I was asked to draw male and female turkeys as well as male and female white-tailed deer (aka whitetails). The guys from Buffalo & Company loved my cross-hatching drawing technique, therefore I traditionally used this technique for the new illustrations to match the style which had become a feature of the t-shirts recently released by Buffalo & Company.

I want to show you low resolution copies of wildlife illustrations created for Buffalo and Company as well as videos which I traditionally shoot for those who may be interested in mastering cross-hatching technique or simply like watching an artist drawing.

I have always been impressed by how many creative ideas the management of Buffalo and Company has and how enthusiastic and energetic their team is. Being their best go to artist (as they call me), I was asked to help in implementing another their original idea of creating a unique series of American wildlife bow ties. For this purpose I was supposed to turn all wildlife illustrations previously created by me for Buffalo and Company into simplified black and white images, a kind of stencil pictures of animals (a bison, an elk, a brss, a trout, mallards, a male turkey and a male whitetail). And I did so, coz I am always happy to assist in my old clients’ projects and to help to bring their ideas to life. And here is what I came up with black and white American wildlife pics.

New Illustrator and Artist Commission: American Wildlife Illustrations

Wednesday, February 3, 2010

In today’s blog post I want to write about my last illustrator and artist commission to draw wild animals of North America. I was hired by Buffalo and Company, Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA to create illustrations for their new American wildlife t-shirt series label. The company specializes in a kind of a patriotic clothes design for hats, shirts, t-shirts, polo shirts etc. So they needed cool wildlife drawings to create classy t-shirts with the wild west feel. They wanted me to draw fish (a bass and a rainbow trout), birds (mallards (wild ducks)) and big animals (a bison and an elk). In this post I will show you the final illustrations as well as a few videos I created specially to show you the process of drawing wild animals beginning from a pencil sketch to the complicated illustrations which have been made using the cross-hatching drawing technique. In the videos I tried to indicate the main milestones of the cross-hatching drawing process which might be interesting for those who want to know more how to draw cross-hatching.

I realize that you may think why a Ukrainian artist should draw north American national wildlife. Well, there are at least three reasons why I was chosen for this commission. The first reason is that the guys from Buffalo and Company seem to love my cross-hatching style after I had drawn them an illustration for their apparel catalog a few months ago. You can see the illustration below. It shows bisons grazing on a wheat field on the background of the mountains.

American wildlife, buffalo, bison, field, illustration, drawing by Igor Lukyanov (cross-hatching)

When I was drawing this illustration I was wondering whether the clients would love this cross-hatching style. And they did, and, furthermore, they got back to me with this new wildlife t-shirts project. The other reason is that the animals I have drawn are not something from the other planet for me as similar animals live in Ukraine too. We have bass, trout, mallards, deer (which are similar to elks), and even European bisons (we call them “zoobr”) also known as aurochs (scientifically Bison bonasus). So I know that some of these beautiful animals are really rare and every country can be proud of having such wonderful representatives of fauna on its territory since healthy and rich nature is a treasure of all nations. And the third reason why I was hired to implement this illustration project is my competitive prices for illustrations as for the time being I am looking for extending my independent, freelance illustrator’s portfolio and I am rather flexible about price issues.

But let’s go to the main topic of the post. I want to show the wildlife illustrations I have created and which, I believe, will help to make cool and classy wildlife t-shirts. The illustrations are accompanied with videos showing the drawing process. I guess that the drawing videos will make this post more interesting for artists and people who love pen and pencil drawing.

I also created some cool banners for placing on t-shirts. I made a few banner options to choose from or mix and match on a t-shirt somehow. These banners are designed to create that old wild west feel. Here are how the banners look.

I think the guys from Buffalo and Company will take care of the further processing of the banners and the illustrations to perfectly fit them to the company’s t-shirts look and feel. I know that Buffalo and Company has developed its own clothes philosophy which they try to reflect in the apparel they design. This clothing is for those who honor their country, and I wish that every patriot of the USA, who, no doubt, honors America, would want to buy a t-shirt with my American wildlife drawings on it. I wish Buffalo and Company good luck in selling clothes and thanks for hiring me.

Updated on February 27, 2010. I am glad to announce that the first wildlife organic t-shirts with the buffalo drawing have been printed and are available in the Buffalo and Company on-line store.
